The Indian Railways is one of the world's largest networks, with a cumulative track length of 119630 kms, carrying 8 billion passengers in a year and cargo of 3 million tonne per day. At present, the Indian Railways has ambitious plans for railway electrification, track doubling, track renewal, interstate corridor projects, modernization of railway stations, metro & mono rail rapid transport systems etc., During the 12th Five Year (2012-17) Plan, India's target for infrastructural investments was Rs.55.75 lakh crores, out of which Rs 5.2 lakh crores was meant for the Indian Railways. By investing such huge investments, steel structures utilized in the railways sector are permanent assets for the nation and therefore they should be durable, long lasting and maintenance-free.
