LEAF RUST RESURFACES IN HONDURAS

Prospects for a further rise in coffee production in Honduras are under threat as leaf rust seems to celebrate a revival in Central America's largest coffee producer.At a gathering of coffee technical experts from across Central America on May 12, World Coffee Research (WCR) confirmed that a coffee variety widely planted across the country because of its resistance to coffee leaf rust is no longer resistant to the disease. The variety, Lempira, makes up a significant portion of Honduran coffee production and has been widely planted since an epidemic of leaf rust hit Central America beginning in 2012.
