Clinical guidelines: a sword or a shield in clinical negligence litigation?

In this paper we discuss the issue of guidelines and attempt to answer three questions: (i) Is a departure from the practice recommended in guidelines prima facie evidence of negligence?(ii) Is adherence to guidelines a robust defence against claims of clinical negligence? and (iii) What guidelines should a urologist know about?
