The Free Enterprise Mine Boulder, Jefferson Co., Montana

Times change. Some doctors once considered cigarette smoking as an innocuous way to reduce the incidence of the common cold. Similarly, breathing radon gas to achieve healthful relief from arthritis and other ailments was (and still is) a practice condoned in some alternative circles. Regardless of medical wisdom of the practice, it is, however, an interesting approach for the rebirth of several old uranium mines in Montana. The Free Enterprise Mine near Boulder, Montana, first publicized this approach (see figure 1) extensively in the early 1950s, and still does so today (see figure 2).
