Silver Ore from the Eagle Mine Red Cliff District, Eagle County, Colorado

A number of years ago I acquired a silver ore specimen (fig. 1) from John Sholes (1918 - 1997) in Grand Junction, CO. John was a geologist, mineral collector and very good friend who managed the geology lab for Bendix Corp., which was a contractor to the AEC at their Grand Junction compound. The ore specimen is rather unique due to its size, composition and location. The specimen came from the well-known Eagle Mine (fig. 2 on page 3) of Empire Zinc Company, a subsidiary of New Jersey Zinc Company. The mine is located at Gilman, Red Cliff District (also known as the Gilman District, Battle Mountain District), Eagle Co., Colorado. Empire Zinc consolidated several mines in the District which became part of the Eagle Mine.
