Following the discovery of the Comstock Lode at what became Virginia City, Nevada Territory, Pioche became the next "Queen of the Silver Camps". Pioche lies at the southern end of the Great Basin at an elevation of ~6,000 ft. The Great Basin encompasses almost all of Nevada, western Utah, southern Idaho, southeast Oregon and southeastern California. It is a unique geological region in that it has been elevated and extended in an east - west direction and the extension continues today. There are a number of theories regarding the formation of the Great Basin, but none cast in concrete. If you want to start an argument ask a group of geologists to explain the formation of the Great Basin. If you have three geologists you should get at least 5 theories none of which agree with the others!
