Phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Pimpinella tirupatiensis Bal. & Subr. : An endemic important medicinal plant to Tirumala hills of Eastern Ghats, India

Pimpinella tirupatiensis Bal. & Sub. (Fam. Apiaceae) is an important medicinal herb, endemic to Tirumala hills of Eastern ghats, India. Almost all of its parts are used in traditional system of medicine including tuberous roots, shoots, leaves and seeds. The review reveals the phytochemical constituents isolated from the plant which possess pharmacological activities like antibacterial, antifungal, febrifuge, aphrodisiac, abortifacient, swelling, rheumatic diseases, diabetes, jaundice and various other important medicinal properties. The whole plant of P. tirupatiensis is used to treat cough, stomach, liver problems, asthma, ulcer and tooth ache. The root extract is also used to treat skin disease and is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is even given in the treatment of venereal disease and peptic ulcers. In last few decades an extensive research work has been done to confirm its biological activities and pharmacological properties. The article provides an account of updated information on its phytochemical and pharmacological properties of P. tirupatiensis.
