Advances in Antimicrobials and Vaccines

Purpose: With the threat of growing bacterial resistance, substantial research has been placed into finding new antibiotics and other approaches to fight infection. This paper focuses on new dosage forms of some older antibiotics; discusses telithromycin, the first ketolide; and provides an update on the development of various vaccines.Methods: Searches were conducted utilizing Medline, Web of Science, general internet search engines, and references of pertinent articles. Preference was given to the most recent information when multiple sources were available.Results: Ronidor (cefaclor chewable) and the DisperDose system [amoxicillin (Dispermox) and cephalexin (Panixine DisperDose)] have been utilized to make administration easier for some patients. Ketek (telithromycin) is the first ketolide antibiotic, and it offers the potential to treat infections that may be resistant to the macrolide antibiotic. New vaccine development techniques offer the potential to improve current vaccines and develop vaccines against infectious diseases that have not previously been available.Conclusion: Ranidor, Dispermox, and Panixine Disperdose give greater flexibility for patients. Ketek will be a useful addition for some difficult-to-treat infections. Novel vaccines are creating new opportunities for treating some diseases.
