Editor - As a medical student entering her second year in a 4-year US curriculum, I was very interested to read how Hill and Vaughan applied the concept of 'paradigmatic trajectories', derived from community of practice theory, to the experiences and personal narratives of female medical students. Whereas Hill and Vaugh-an's analysis focused on students in their clinical phase of training, I have noticed that many of the 'key processes' that shape paradigmatic trajectories - seeing, hearing, doing and imagining - begin long before female students step into the operating room (OR).
