Four basic techniques are used for joining engineered ceramics, including both direct and indirect methods. In direct joining, no intermediate materials are needed, while the indirect methods require an intermediate material. In most cases, the intermediate bridges incompatibilities between the materials, whether these incompatibilities are chemical, mechanical, or physical. The four techniques include mechanical joining, welding, and sinter bonding, as well as a family of exclusively indirect methods that include adhesive bonding and brazing or soldering. This article describes the four joining techniques in some detail.
