According to the Winter Loss Survey for 2019-20, it would appear that the average percent loss this winter is estimated tc be 24.7%, which is considered on the high side of normal. Typically winter losses in Manitoba fall somewhere between 15% - 25%.The average percent loss for outdoor wintered colonies is estimated to be 27.6% and indoor losses at 21.6°/c This year we also collected winter loss data from non-commercial beekeepers (<50 colonies) and their average reported percent losses were substantially higher at 34.2%. The most commonly reported reasons for the losses were starvation, followed by poor queens , which was followed by weather conditions and weak colonies in the fall. Many beekeepers reported that weather conditions in the spring were the true problem and that they lost as many colonies this spring as they did all winter.
