At the Carbon Fiber Supply and Market Panel, Tom Lemire from Tohe Carbon Fibers Inc, a unit of Teijin, briefed us on their view of the carbon fiber market supply and demand issues. He noted that "2005 is a pivotal year." There were no major regular tow (often referred to as small or aerospace tow) carbon fiber manufacturers that announced plant expansions from 1998 through 2001. Strong recovery in aerospace demand, coupled with new non-aerospace growth, has lead to a global shortage of carbon fibers. And, the industrial sector is demanding product improvements.
