The dioecious hoka palm goes by several names, depending on locality— doem palm, doom palm and gingerbread tree, among others. Because this particular palm, Hyphaene thebaica, is a dioecious species, it is therefore more genetically diverse than monoecious palms. As many readers know, all monoecious plants produce both male and female flowers, while dioecious plants must have gender-opposite partners nearby, which expands the gene pool of their offspring.
