Independent Producers Disclose Survey Results Demonstrating Only a Minor Impact of Public Campaigns to Encourage Divestment from Fossil Fuel Businesses

FTI Consulting Inc. on April 10 referred a “memorandum” to Jeff Eshelman, Director of Public and Industry Affairs, Independent Petroleum Assn. of America (IPAA), describing the results of a survey intended to gauge just how successful, or unsuccessful, so far has been a public campaign to convince investors to back away from fossil fuel operations that are perceived by some public groups to be frustrating efforts to clean up the environment. FTI Consulting conducted an online survey over the period of March 17- 25, 2015. This research was undertaken at the request of IPAA for the purpose of “acquiring a better and more complete understanding of the views and impressions of professionals in the capital markets community with respect to the proposition of fossil-fuel divestment - and specifically, the efficacy and merit of activist-led campaigns designed to compel institutional investors to divest securities associated with firms that explore for, produce, market and or/ exploit fossil fuels.”
