FERC Adopts Modified Natural Gas Nomination Scheduling Policies to Accommodate the Electric Generation Industry, But Declines to Modify the Current Start Time for the Gas Day

The natural gas industry apparently exhibited a collective sigh of relief on Thursday when FERC voted unanimously to approve a Final Rule (Order No. 809, RM14-2) that implemented measures designed to improve gas-electric service coordination, but left the standard Gas Day commencement time of 9:00 a.m. (Central Standard Time) unchanged. A process has been underway now for more than three years, driven in part and monitored by the Commission, to encourage better coordination of wholesale natural gas and electricity market scheduling as the nation increasingly relies on gas to fuel more electric generation. The Final Rule adopts two proposals submitted by the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) to revise the interstate natural gas nomination timeline and make conforming changes to their standards.
