Hyperbaric Oxygen for the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Systematic Review

To review randomized clinical trials and assess the added value of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in promoting the healing of diabetic foot ulcers and preventing amputations. Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are present in one in 20 patients with diabetes, and almost 10% of those ulcers lead to amputation. Despite the complex multimodal treatments delivered through optimal care, the healing rates are low (60%). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) combined with conventional treatment is suggested to yield better healing outcomes. Usually, HBOT involves intermittent administration of oxygen over hypoxic ulcers on a daily basis, which increases blood oxygen level and activates various factors to promote wound healing.
