Prevention crucial to health secretary's vision for the NHS Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, delivered a major speech at the start of November explaining that prevention is central to his plans for the future of the NHS. Highlighting that the NHS spends just ￡11 billion of its ￡115 billion budget on primary care (where most preventative work happens), Hancock emphasised that better prevention is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the health service.
