Regression of rubeosis in the fellow eye after intravitreal ranibizumab injection

The growth of abnormal vessels on the iris called rubeosis is induced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The involvement of the anterior chamber angle can cause a progressive obstruction leading to neovascular glaucoma (NVG). Rubeosis and NVG are serious complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and other ischemic disorders. VEGF inhibitors have been recently introduced in the treatment of ischemic retinal diseases such as diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion. In addition, case reports have reported on the inhibition of the angiogenic cascade as a therapeutic option in the treatment of NVG.
