A wind turbine manufacturer has worked with synthetic rope manufacturer Samson to replace a number of turbine blades without cranes. The turbine manufacturer used synthetic rope from Samson along with a purpose-built, portable skid-mounted winch system to hoist and control the blade as it was moved into position on the hub. Synthetic ropes were chosen ahead of steel wire rope due to the combined weight of the components for a three-part lifting and lowering system - including the main lifting and lowering line, tag lines, and control lines. The snatch block and crane blocksrequired to meet the D/d ratio for steel wire rope weighed more than 400lb, making it difficult to manoeuvre within the rotor's hub.
