Hermannshof is situated in the picturesque German town of Weinheim, a short distance from Heidelberg. Close to the Rhine, this area enjoys a particularly warm, almost Mediterranean climate, so wine growing is prevalent in the region. This means that more than 2,500 different species and cultivars of perennials, and more than 400 species of trees and shrubs, can be grown at the garden.The site covers 2.3 hectares (5.7 acres) and is owned by one of the largest family-run businesses in Germany, the Freudenberg Group. Originally acquired by Hermann-Ernst Freudenberg in 1888, after his death the garden was named in his honour. In 1979, afamily member, landscape architect Gerda Gollwitzer, suggested that Hermannshof become a public trials garden, focusing on sustainable planting.
