THE port of Marseille-Fos remains France's leading port for fruit and vegetables, accounting for around a quarter of the country's traffic. In 2006, around 558,000 tonnes of fresh produce passed through the port, almost 80 per cent of which represented imports. This year, forecasts predict that throughput will rise to 600,000 tonnes, due primarily to an increase in imports from Egypt, Israel, Morocco and Algeria. Eventually, the port authority, the Chamber of Commerce and the port's operators hope to increase total throughput to 1 m tonnes.
