The isopoach maps for the Rotliegend formations (Upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian) within the Saar-Nahe Basin are based on industry and research wells and 2D reflection seismic sections acquired by the oil industry as well as two DEKORP seismic lines. Well information was used to tie the seismic sections into the regional lithostratigraphy and for depth conversion. The surface geology from geological maps was used to trace the locations of faults and to localize the approximate position of formation tops mapped on seismic sections. Thickness variations across faults indicate syn-sedimentary fault movement. This is evident particularly between the Remigiusberg and the Wahnwegen Formation, as well as the Disibodenberg to Donnersberg Formation, whereas moderate fault activity is indicated during deposition of the Lauterecken and Mei-senheim Formation. The Quirnbach Formation was largely a period of tectonic quiescence whereas the deposition of the Wadern to Kreuznach Formation was characterized by regional subsidence due to thermal cooling and compaction.
