The JIB was originally established by the Electrical Contractors' Association and trade union EETPU back in 1968, to provide stability after a period of extremely poor industrial relations in electrical contracting during the 1950s and 1960s. With contractors and their electricians at constant loggerheads, productivity across the industry was at its worst until both sides finally agreed to come to a resolution by way of the JIB. Owned jointly by employers and employees - via the trade association and trade union - the JIB facilitated discussions and ultimately agreement on how to proceed in areas such as wages and other employment terms and conditions.
