Describing it as the "ultimate deal," incoming US President Donald Trump has said he would like to find a solution to the long-running Israel-Palestine conflict — something that has so far eluded all other US administrations. But right now Israeli and Palestinian negotiating positions remain far apart, and both sides lack the political muscle needed to push through the concessions needed for a deal. A Trump administration could also find it hard to avoid the impression of bias toward Israel. In these circumstances, resuscitating a two-state solution looks a tall task (EC Aug. 16' 13). But the alternative, a slow drift toward a "one-state" solution in which Israel permanently governs Palestinian communities, may not be sustainable.
