The US over the last decade has been struggling to reassess its role in the Middle East. The surge in US production means oil no longer binds the US as tightly to the region as it once did,a loosening that's been compounded by US weariness with foreign military interventions. But US President Donald Trump's early vows to seek a lighter footprint in the Middle East have not manifested in a smooth or consistent fashion, and could be complicated by a continued ramping up of pressure on Iran in any second term.If elected,Democratic candidate and former US Vice President Joe Biden will also look to recalibrate US Mideast policy amid pressure from both sides of the aisle to focus on China,Russia and US troubles at home, even as a Biden team tries to repair the tattered 2015 Iran nuclear deal(EC Jun.5'20).
