Century Aluminum sees more cutbacks, ships less

US primary aluminium smelters may be producing at less than a third of last year’s rate by the middle of 2016 should current economic conditions persist, Century Aluminum chief executive Michael Bless said. Cutbacks could reduce output to a rate as low as 500,000 t/yr, which would be less than a third of the 1.6mn t/yr that the US Geological Survey reported that the country’s smelters produced in 2015. Several curtailments were announced late last year, but not all have been implemented.
