China meets coal-fred capacity cut target

China has fulflled its target for reducing coal-fred power gen- eration capacity it set for its current fve-year economic plan, helping curb the increase in the country’s coal consumption. China’s central government in 2016 set a target of perma- nently shutting down low-efciency coal-fred power capacity of 20GW during the fve-year period of 2016-20. This goal has been met ahead of schedule, the director of the planning de- partment of the national energy administration (NEA) Li Fulong said on 20 September. Li also said that the NEA is confdent that China will achieve the goal of limiting installed coal-fred power capacity at 1,100GW by 2020.
