China’s apparent demand for crude fell in May after hitting a record high in April, as domestic refneries cut imports and throughputs because of extensive planned maintenance work. Apparent demand - production plus net imports - was at 13.3mn b/d last month, down by 8pc from April but higher than 12.9mn b/d a year earlier, according to estimates based on ofcial data. Domestic crude output inched up by 1pc from a year earlier to 3.8mn b/d in May and was little changed from April, according to preliminary fgures released by the national statistics bureau (NBS) on 14 June.
