Heidelberg switches fuels to cut energy costs

Signifcant and unexpected energy cost increases have driven Heidelberg Cement to switch fuels at some of its plants, chief executive Bernd Scheifele said. Newcastle coal prices, the key Asia-Pacifc indicator for coal, are about 40pc higher than they were at the end of last year, when the company created its fuel budget. The company typically bases its price assumptions on the forward curve, which was around $85-$86/t at the time, and it had expected this price to decline to around $80/t, Scheifele said. Instead, it has risen to now around $123/t.
