Coal supply is not expected to keep up with rising demand in the coming years, as investors remain reluctant to spend money to expand coal mining despite a strong economic outlook. This dynamic should support coal prices and drive demand for petroleum coke in turn. Current coal prices are not garnering the same level of investment into mine expansion as they have in the past, largely for political reasons, speakers said at the Cimeurope Cemprospects conference in Rome last week.
