Petroleum coke markets were in limbo this week, as partici- pants waited for news of a potential ban on coke consumption in the region surrounding India’s capital. The Supreme Court has yet to rule on a proposed ban on coke use around Delhi. Local environmental regulators disap- prove of coke because they say its high sulphur emissions create smog that can lead to respiratory problems. The central government argues that the health concerns are overblown and supports coke as an inexpensive industrial fuel. The BJP government had asked for time to gather info on whether there is enough natural gas or other alternatives to supply affected industries, with a hearing originally expected this week. But there has been no word from the court, suggesting that the hearing has been delayed.
