US coal production to fall to 47-year low in 2020

US coal production is expected fall next year to a 47-year low, revised government forecasts show. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects 2020 production to total 601.1mn short tons (545.3mn t), down by 14pc from the 697mn st expected to be produced this year. The updated forecast, released today in the EIA’s latest Short- Term Energy Outlook, is down from the 607.1mn st the agency projected just a month ago and would be the lowest output level since 598.6mn st was produced in 1973.
