Strike starts at Colombian coal producer Cerrejon

Unionized workers at Colombia's second-largest thermal coal mine, Cerrejon, began to strike on 31 August, blocking around 31pc of the country's steam coal exports. The strike began at 3:15pm local time, suspending indef-nitely all of Cerrejon's production activities and the salaries for 5,000 direct workers and thousands of contractors, the company said. This is Cerrejon's frst strike since 2013. “The union's decision coincides with one of the most challenging moments experienced by the company, which in recent years has seen demand and coal prices fall,” the com-pany said.
