South Africa’s coal output drops by 11pc

South Africa’s coal production fell by nearly 11pc on the year in June because of the economic impact of the country’s lockdown regulations, according to state-run statistics agency Stats SA. The coal sector contributed 2.7 percentage points to an overall 28pc decline in the country’s mining production during the month. Platinum group metals made the largest negative contribution at 11 percentage points, as its output shrank by 43pc. Iron ore production fell by 54pc and contributed 6.7 percentage points to the slump.
