Indian cement output contracted by 22pc in May from a year earlier as Covid-19 triggered an economic slowdown. The decline in cement production in turn weighed on demand for petroleum coke. Indian cement makers produced 22.2mn t in May, down from 28.6mn t a year earlier, government data show. That was the third consecutive monthly year-on-year decline in cement output, although May’s output was higher than April when the industry produced just 4mn t of cement. Prior to a nationwide lockdown that was imposed on 25 March to contain the Co- vid-19 outbreak, Indian cement output had increased over four consecutive months in November 2019-February 2020.
