UAE aluminium producer Emirates Global Aluminium’s (EGA) Al Taweelah alumina refnery operated at full nameplate capacity throughout June, the company said today. The refnery cost $3.3bn to build and has a capacity of around 2mn t/yr, which is around 40pc of EGA’s annual alumina requirement for its aluminium smelter. It is the frst alumina refnery in the UAE, and one of the frst in the region after Ma’aden constructed an alumina refnery in Saudi Arabia as part of a joint venture with Alcoa, which began operations in 2014. A number of UAE nationals were sent to Ma’aden’s re- fnery to prepare for roles at Al Taweelah, helping to expedite the ramp up from commencing production to full capacity to within just 14 months.
