Korean EV exports jump by 80pc

South Korean exports of electric vehicles (EVs) climbed by 80pc from a year earlier in March, even as the Covid-19 pan- demic began to wreck global economies, portending resilient demand for cobalt, nickel and other metals used in EV batter- ies. Unit sales jumped to 8,800 last month from 4,900 in March 2019, data from South Korea’s ministry of trade, industry and energy (Motie) showed. The country’s automakers also posted a 114pc gain in exports of plug-in hybrids as demand for elec- trifed cars increased, especially in Europe. Domestic demand growth was tamer, with South Korean sales of EVs rising by 16pc on the year to 5,870 units.
