Hibbing has been one of the best performers on the Iron Range and continued in production through the period in 2015and 2016 when other operations were suspended due to low prices and decline in domestic iron ore demand as steelimports displaced domestic production.From 2016 steel and iron ore producers vigorously lobbied for protection which was successful in reducing steel importsand contributed to a revival of domestic steel production and domestic iron ore demand.Cliffs believes that lower land freight costs, isolation by lock access through the Great Lakes and long term relationshipswith its customers provides protection from seaborne iron ore imports.Cliffs is developing a HBI plant in Ohio with concentrate supplied form the Iron Range in response to the long-term declinein US BF crude steel production and demand for BF pellet.
