This research was to design a briquettizing machine to produce biomass briquette fuel by a cold compression process, and to investigate its performance in terms of production rate and specific energy consumption. The compression pressures and proportions of raw materials were varied to study the effect on production rate and specific energy consumption. The pressures used in this study were 10 MPa, 15 MPa, 20 MPa, 25 MPa and 30 MPa. Rice husk char or sawdust are mixed with molass and glycerin in different proportions to produce the biomass briquette fuel. The experimental results showed that the production rate is about 30-42 kg/h and the specific energy is about 0.0128-0.0723 kW-h/kg depending on the test conditions. The density and compressive strength of the produced biomass briquette were determined to optimize the operating conditions. It was found that at 10 MPa compression pressure, the specific energy consumption is minimum while the briquette density and compressive are acceptable compared to fuel standard.
