Electromagnetic Braking Using Eddy Current Resistance for Stationary Exercise Bike

A system was developed for measuring and analyzing the forces exerted on a bicycle pedal where resistance given by the electromagnetic braking using eddy current. The electromagnetic braking using eddy current gives some resistance while cycling by varying the amount of current induced to the electromagnet coil. It is a one dimensional force measurement which directly measures the normal force using strain gauge mounted under the pedal. Subject been instructed to cycling in range of speed from 100 to 120 RPM for every amount of current induced to the system. Strain gauge configured as half bridge circuit connection through a setup with proper data acquisition. Testing recorded using the syncronization of data acquisition and Dasylab software. Data presented in two different sets of filtered data and peak-to-peak amplitude. Findings show that subject needs to put an additional load of 25 N to 55 N to maintain cycling in speed range given when 1 A to 4 A of current induced. Increasing the current induced to the electromagnetic braking system has increase the cycling resistance which proportionally increases the intensity of the exercise. Therefore, there is a potential on applying this electromagnetic braking using eddy current for stationary bicycle exercise bike.
