The multiparty democratic Republic of Senegal is the westernmost country on the African mainland, a location which made it a convenient, if disputed academically, hub for the horror of the of transatlantic slave trade of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Nowadays, the modern economy is founded mainly upon agriculture, with peanuts being a particularly important cash crop. The 'House of slaves' museum, with its 'Door of no return' provides both museum and memorial to the enforced transportation of millions of people to the new world, as well as an attraction for foreign tourists and world leaders to Senegal.
