Using methacrylic acid(MAA) and acrylonitrile(AN) as monomers and adding a certain amount of TBPMI which used as flame retardancy, a new flame retardant polymethacrylimide(FR-PMI) foam was prepared. In order to understand the effect of TBPMI, three groups of FR-PMI foams produced with different concentrations of TBPMI were investigated by using DSC, SEM, TGA, flammability test and compressive strength test. The unique combination of these analytical techniques has proved to be a valuable method for understanding the flammability of FR-PMI foam. The TGA showed that the FR-PMI foam significantly improve the heat resistant of the PMI foam. SEM was employed to observe the cell structure of the FR-PMI foam and the results indicated that the products were in good dispersion. The standard flammability tests indicated that the FR-PMI foam had great flame retardancy and an optimum FR concentration was about 17wt% TBPMI for foams. The compressive strength tests clearly showed FR-PMI maintain the mechanical properties of the foam. Finally, this study has shown that the addition of the TBPMI to foam formulation not only have high flame retardant performance and high thermal resistance but also can preserve the excellent mechanical properties.
