The Fracture Analysis of Instop Gasket Using FEM Simulations

The instop gasket is one kind of sealing gasket, which is placed between cylinder block and head of the engine. The fracture is observed at the formed waves of the gasket after engine tests. There are three operations that may contribute to the fracture. A series of finite element simulations are performed to investigate the cause of the fracture. The stress distribution and thickness reduction of gasket waves is calculated during the forming and assembly. Three ductile fracture criteria are used to evaluate fracture in the gasket waves. Simulation results show that location of maximum damage values do not match with the actual fracture location. The analysis of the fracture due to fatigue is carried out according to Goodman's law. The analysis results show that the highest potential fatigue fracture location corresponds to the actual fracture location. In order to eliminate the fracture, the geometries of the forming dies are modified and corresponding simulations are conducted.
