Membrane-gravity correspondence

We discuss a novel description of the dynamics of black holes in terms of the dynamics of “Membranes”. The membrane description emerges naturally if we consider black holes in the limit of a large number of spacetime dimensions D. This “Large D membrane paradigm” can be systematically constructed in a perturbation theory in 1/D. A similar membrane description can be constructed for the case of finite-dimensional black holes — and it reproduces black hole dynamics correctly in some nontrivial cases — which is quite striking.
