In the present study, an eco-friendly approach to synthesize silver nanoparticles and their use as a potential antibacterial and antifungal additive to water based interior paint were investigated. Silver nanoparticles were rapidly synthesized within 20 min using leaf extract of Couroupita guianensis. UV-vis spectrophotometer, Powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, HrTEM and EDX analysis were used to characterize the synthesized silver nanoparticles. UV-vis spectrum analysis showed the surface plasmon peak at 415 nm. From high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HrTEM) analysis, the size of the silver nanoparticles was determined to be 5-15 nm. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles showed good antibacterial and antifungal activity against selected pathogenic strains E. coli, S. aureus, M. luteus, K. pneumoniae, B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa, Candida tropicalis, C.krusei, C. glabrata, C. albicans.
