Room acoustics design by a sound energy transition approach

Room acoustics design requires reliable and efficient modelling techniques, which can account for complex geometries and for all the physical phenomena involved. For general applications, fast computation methods and accurate prediction methods are not necessarily the same. In this paper, a procedure was developed by considering a statistical distribution of energy inside an enclosure of arbitrary shape. The sound energy is considered as a distribution of energy packets, which are radiated from the sound sources and re-radiated diffusely from the enclosure walls. A general equation for the motion of the sound particles inside the enclosure is derived, where the different transitions are independent and the motion is considered as a Markov process. A computer program, Coliseo, was written for the calculation of the steady-state sound pressure distribution and the room impulse response. This allowed the calculation of reverberation times and room sound quality parameters, such as clarity and intelligibility indexes. Comparisons with other methods and with experimental results showed the method to be reliable, very flexible and with low computation time. [References: 13]
