In even more regions, stricter environmental regulations forbid the primary aluminium smelting industry from continuing to dispose of spent potlining (SPL) in landfill. Many smelters are investing in SPL storage facilities as a stop-gap measure, but this approach consumes capital, and it only delays the inevitable requirement to deal with the SPL. The risk of contaminated leachate from SPL landfills, as well as the obligations with longerterm storage of SPL, present significant financial liabilities.
