Around the world, maintenance teams have noticed increased and further increasing CO and CO2 levels in their transformer fleet. Papers and reports have been published explaining the reason for this recent trend. This paper will provide some additional information from studies and fleet comparison. Unfortunately, new IEEE / IEC guides do not consider the latest findings. This will lead to confusion for the oil analysis laboratories and the transformer operators. Oil analyses have found transformers with more than 2,000 ppm CO which are in perfect condition This is because, as described in many publications and IEEE / IEC guides, CO and CO2 levels do not matter as long as no other gases are out of range.
