Dental restorative materials have come a long way since 1 955 when Dr. Michael Buonocore first described the acid etch technique, a simple method of increasing the adhesion of acrylic fillings to enamel. Seven years later, Dr. Rafael Bowen at the ADA Paffenbarger Research Center, in a joint research program with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, developed Bis-GMA, the thermoset resin complex used in most modern composite resin restorative materials. Since then, we've seen continuous and dramatic improvements in the number of available products and variety of applications.
