摘要

Domestic political issues in the U.S. and Mexico are complicating efforts to renegotiate the North American Free Trade agreement and putting in jeopardy a shared goal of forging a new deal quickly, according to several former government officials. "I don't know whether anybody has really thought through the challenges, in this country, of putting another vote on NAFTA, as reformed, as updated, through the Congress," former U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said at a Sept. 21 forum hosted by the University of California and Tecnologico de Monterrey. "And where the votes might come from, whether Democrats will support it this time, even with these changes, whether Republicans [who] are going to be under populist pressure in their own constituencies, will support it."
